Summary
The Senior Manager, U.S. Indirect Tax will lead indirect tax planning, compliance, and audit management for the company’s U.S. manufacturing, office, and warehouse operations. The role oversees sales and use tax, property tax, state and local registrations, and related business administration. This position partners with Finance, Legal, Procurement, Operations, and external advisors to manage tax exposure, identify tax savings opportunities, and support business expansion.

Key Responsibilities
Tax Planning and Business Support
  • Develop and implement indirect tax strategies for manufacturing operations, capital investments, equipment purchases, inventory movements, and business expansion.
  • Evaluate the sales and use tax implications of customer and supplier arrangements, intercompany transactions, leases, and construction projects.
  • Identify and implement applicable manufacturing exemptions, exclusions, refunds, and other indirect tax savings opportunities.
  • Advise business teams on transaction structure, contract terms, invoicing, and documentation requirements.
Sales and Use Tax Compliance
  • Oversee multistate sales and use tax compliance, including return preparation and review, payments, account reconciliations, and filing calendars.
  • Assess nexus and registration obligations as the business enters new states or expands existing operations.
  • Manage taxability determinations, exemption and resale certificates, and use tax accruals on purchases.
  • Maintain tax policies, procedures, and system controls to support accurate tax calculation and reporting.
Property Tax
  • Manage real and business personal property tax compliance, including annual filings, assessments, payments, and reconciliations.
  • Work with Accounting and Operations to validate asset classifications, costs, locations, disposals, and construction in progress.
  • Review assessed values and coordinate valuation analyses, appeals, and discussions with assessors and external advisors.
  • Monitor applicable property tax exemptions, abatements, and related reporting commitments.
Tax Audits and Controversy
  • Lead state and local indirect tax audits.
  • Manage information requests, supporting documentation, technical responses, and communications with tax authorities.
  • Evaluate proposed assessments and coordinate protests, appeals, settlements, refund claims, and voluntary disclosures as appropriate.
  • Implement corrective actions to address audit findings and reduce recurring exposure.
State Registrations and Business Administration
  • Oversee state and local tax registrations, seller’s permits, account updates, renewals, and closures.
  • Coordinate with Legal and other functions on business registrations, annual reports, business licenses, and other state and local administrative filings.
  • Support new entity formation, facility openings, relocations, and closures by identifying and coordinating applicable requirements.
  • Maintain a centralized compliance calendar and clear ownership of filing obligations.
Leadership and Process Improvement
  • Lead internal staff and external service providers, including oversight of work quality, deadlines, and budgets.
  • Strengthen internal controls, documentation standards, and audit readiness.
  • Drive automation and improvements in tax data, ERP processes, and reporting.
  • Communicate tax exposures, savings opportunities, and recommended actions to senior management.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of progressively responsible U.S. indirect tax experience, including management of complex multistate matters.
  • Significant hands-on California indirect tax experience, including sales and use tax compliance, planning, and audits, as well as familiarity with California property tax requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of sales and use tax, real and business personal property tax, nexus, exemptions, and state and local registration requirements.
  • Experience managing tax audits and working directly with tax authorities and external advisors.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate technical tax issues into practical business guidance.
  • Strong leadership, project management, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Experience working with ERP systems, fixed asset records, and large transaction datasets.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA, CMI, or a master’s degree in Taxation.
  • Experience in manufacturing, electronics, technology hardware, or another capital-intensive business.
  • Experience with manufacturing exemptions, major capital projects, property tax appeals, and tax abatement compliance.
  • Experience with SAP and indirect tax software such as Vertex or Avalara.
  • Experience supporting a multinational organization and collaborating across functions and jurisdictions.
